Bim Bam Gallery a le plaisir d'annoncer "Poor Sap", la première exposition personnelle d'Hannah Wilson en France. L'artiste qui vit et travaille à Glasgow, en Écosse, présente une nouvelle série de peintures à l'huile.

Ce nouveau corpus d'œuvres dépeint des personnages masculins, tirés de différents films, qui éprouvent des sentiments conflictuels alors qu’ils traversent des situations difficiles. Les portraits d'Hannah Wilson, inspirés par les cadrages cinématographiques, ne montrent pas entièrement les visages des sujets. L’artiste les met en scène dans des compositions originales et énigmatiques. Le visage n'étant pas entièrement révélé, le portrait existe au-delà de ce qu'il représente sur la toile, laissant le spectateur se demander ce que regarde le personnage et à quoi il ressemble.

L'étrangeté de la composition interroge le contexte dans lequel la silhouette est montrée, invitant le spectateur à y porter un regard empathique: « Les peintures de l'exposition sont extraites de scènes de films, où les personnages principaux se sentent anéantis. Solitaires, la plupart de mes sujets fuient le regard du spectateur. »

Avec cette série de peintures, Hannah Wilson exprime son interprétation personnelle de la masculinité vue par le cinéma, dont iel se sert afin de définir sa propre identité : « Le point de départ de cette exposition a été le film Raging Bull, de Martin Scorsese. Son personnage central, Jake LaMotta, est brutal, violent et animé par ses bas instincts. Cependant, il lui manque la maturité émotionnelle pour faire face aux conséquences de ses actes. C'est un cycle sans fin : faire le mal puis chercher la pénitence, mais ne jamais changer. C'est quelque chose qui m'est resté et je savais que je voulais en faire le thème de mon exposition. »

Bim Bam Gallery is happy to announce "Poor Sap", Hannah Wilson's first solo show in France. The artist who lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland, will be presenting a new series of oil paintings on canvas.

This new body of work depicts male characters from different movies, all going through personal matters and experiencing conflictual feelings. Hannah Wilson’s portraits don’t fully show the subjects’ faces. While using the staged point of view from the movie, the artist is creating an original and enigmatic composition. Since the subject is not fully revealed, the portrait exists beyond what it is depicting on the canvas, leaving the spectator wondering what the subject looks like and what he is looking at.

The oddity of the composition questions the context in which the character is shown, inviting the viewer to have an empathetic look towards him: “The paintings in the show are drawn from moments in various films, where the main character felt like a black hole. Almost all of the subjects of the paintings are turned away, and are lone in their canvases.”

Throughout the series of paintings, Hannah Wilson expresses their personal interpretation of masculinity in cinema, while defining their own identity: “The trigger point for this body of work was Martin Scorsese’s film Raging Bull. Its central character Jake LaMotta is brutish, violent and driven by his base instincts. However, he lacks the emotional maturity to cope with the consequences of his actions. It's an endless cycle: doing wrong and seeking punishment, while never changing. This was something that stuck with me, and I knew I wanted to make a show around that.”
